Hey, guess what's brewing in the Criminal Minds universe? The cameras started rolling on Jan. 16 for the latest season of Paramount+'s Criminal Minds: Evolution. And here's the scoop: Zach Gilford is making a comeback as the infamous UnSub Elias Voit.
If you remember, Voit was outsmarted and nabbed in the season finale last February. But hold up – he's not done causing chaos. In behind-the-scenes pics, we see him as a captive, getting a VIP visit from a mysterious someone. This someone seems pretty intrigued about Voit's knowledge of Gold Star, a hush-hush government secret.
Showrunner Erica Messer spilled the beans, saying, "You have not seen the last of Elias." In her vision, Voit is the revival's "Hannibal Lecter" character. And brace yourself because the Gold Star mystery is making a comeback. Messer explained it's like, "We thought we knew everything… about the [Sicarius serial killer] network and Voit and all this stuff." Voit's bombshell revelation becomes the jump-start for the upcoming season.
But wait, there's a twist this time. Unlike Evolution's first run, which focused solely on Voit, Messer revealed, "We're going to do a hybrid." The first four episodes will be a mix of serialized and standalone stories.

Hold on to your hats – the new season got the green light over a year ago. The writers' room kicked into gear shortly after, but the looming threat of a Writers Guild strike put things in slow motion. Originally set to start filming in April 2023, the studio hit pause due to the strike concerns. June was the new target, but the WGA strike became a reality.
SAG-AFTRA joined the strike in mid-June, adding another hurdle. Both guilds needed to nail down deals with the AMPTP before the cameras could roll.
