The elders of the Osage Nation express deep sorrow as they bury a ceremonial pipe, mourning the assimilation of their descendants into White American society. While wandering the Oklahoma reservation during the annual "flower moon" phenomena, where fields burst into blooms, some Osage stumble upon oil seeping from the earth. This discovery brings prosperity to the tribe, as they retain mineral rights and receive earnings from oil leases. However, a law dictates that funds belonging to full-blood and half-blood members must be managed by white legal guardians if deemed "incompetent."

Returning from World War I, Ernest Burkhart settles on his uncle William King Hale's ranch with his brother Byron in 1919. Hale, a rancher and deputy sheriff, interacts with the Osage kindly, conversing in their language and offering gifts. However, Byron and Ernest conspire to commit armed robberies against the Osage. Ernest, working as a cab driver, meets Mollie Kyle, an Osage with oil headrights, and they marry in a blend of Osage and Roman Catholic traditions, raising three children together.

Hale secretly orders the killings of wealthy Osage members, claiming that if more of Mollie's family members die, Ernest will gain more headrights. With Mollie's diabetes and her mother Lizzie's illness, tensions rise. Hale instructs Byron to murder Mollie's sister Anna after the death of Minnie from an unknown ailment. In response, Lizzie and the Osage council demand retaliation against the white residents of the reservation.
