Inspired by the 1978 film of the same title, "Don" follows the story of a look-alike who is sent on a covert mission to impersonate Don and gather intelligence on the drug mafia after the criminal is wounded in a chase. Farhan Akhtar, in his directorial vision, aimed to give a contemporary style and treatment to the original film, making it perfectly suited for modern audiences. Co-writing the screenplay with his father, Javed Akhtar, who had also written the original script, Akhtar paid homage to the 1970s era and the original cast and crew while introducing changes like an international setting and a different ending.

Principal photography commenced in Mumbai before moving to Malaysia, where 80% of the film was shot. The soundtrack, composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, added to the film's allure, creating a musical backdrop that resonated with audiences.

"Don: The Chase Begins Again" hit theaters on 20 October 2006, coinciding with the festive season of Diwali. Despite facing competition from "Jaan-E-Mann," the film emerged as a major commercial success, grossing over ₹1.06 billion at the box office against a production and marketing budget of ₹400 million. The movie received praise for its action sequences, soundtrack, production design, cinematography, and the stellar performances of Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra.
Recognition and Sequel
The film won Best Asian Film at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival and received nine nominations at the 52nd Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Actor (Khan). Shah Rukh Khan's return to playing the villain after a decade added to the film's intrigue. A sequel titled "Don 2" was released on 23 December 2011, further solidifying the legacy of the "Don" franchise in Indian cinema.
