Bridget Jones is making her way back to the big screen!
After strategic behind-the-scenes maneuvers, Universal Pictures and Working Title have officially assembled the cast for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, marking the fourth chapter in the beloved British romantic comedy series.
Renée Zellweger will reprise her role as the endearing yet stumbling-through-life Bridget Jones, joined by Hugh Grant returning as the mischievous Daniel Cleaver. Emma Thompson, a familiar face from the 2016 installment Bridget Jones’s Baby, is also back on board. Joining the ensemble are Chiwetel Ejiofor and emerging talent Leo Woodall, gaining recognition for his performance in The White Lotus season two.
Michael Morris, who directed the Andrea Riseborough drama "To Leslie," will take the helm as the director for this adaptation of the best-selling 2013 novel by Helen Fielding, the creator of Jones. Fielding herself penned the script.
In "Mad About a Boy," readers and audiences witness Jones experiencing love triangles, seeking romance, and even becoming a mother. However, the novel introduces new layers of embarrassment as Jones incorporates tweets and texts into her diary. Now, Jones navigates life, work, family, and love as a 51-year-old single mother and widow, all while engaging in passionate encounters with a younger man.
Universal plans to debut the romantic comedy on Peacock on Valentine’s Day 2025, followed by an international theatrical release.
Producing the film are Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Jo Wallett from Working Title Films, with Amelia Granger and Sarah-Jane Wright serving as executive producers. Fielding also holds an executive producer credit, and Miramax is co-financing the feature.
Renée Zellweger first portrayed Jones in the 2001 adaptation, earning acclaim and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Alongside Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, she reprised her role in the 2004 sequel "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason." While Grant opted out of the 2016 installment "Bridget Jones’s Baby," Zellweger and Firth returned.
The trilogy has amassed over $760 million worldwide. Zellweger's most recent notable role was in the biopic "Judy" in 2019, earning her a second Academy Award. Grant appeared in the limited series "The Regime" and the Warner Bros. film "Wonka."
Emma Thompson, represented by CAA and Hamilton Hodell, was last seen in Netflix’s "Matilda: The Musical." Chiwetel Ejiofor starred in Showtime's "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and premiered his second directorial feature, "Rob Peace," at the Sundance Film Festival.
Leo Woodall, known for his role in "The White Lotus," is set to star in Netflix’s "One Day" and James Vanderbilt’s "Nuremberg." Michael Morris, previously involved with "Better Call Saul," will direct the film and is represented by UTA and Paul Hastings.
Universal's senior executives Erik Baiers and Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project's development.
