Sarah Snook, the highly sought-after actress, has joined forces with Oscar-winning Australian director Adam Elliot for his upcoming stop-motion drama "Memoir of a Snail." She will lend her voice to the film's lead character, Grace Puddle, and also serve as the narrator.
In the movie, Grace Puddle is portrayed as a solitary outsider who collects decorative snails and finds solace in romance novels. The production companies Charades in Paris and Anton in London, which previously announced joint sales of the film at Cannes, have unveiled a new image ahead of the EFM, where they plan to debut a fresh promotional material.
Snook's involvement in "Memoir of a Snail" coincides with her starring role in Oscar Wilde's "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" at London’s Theatre Royal, where she portrays all 26 characters in a 14-week run.
This project marks Snook's debut as the lead voice in a feature animation. For Elliot, known for his acclaimed work "Mary And Max," this film represents his second feature. His earlier short film "Harvey Krumpet" earned him an Oscar.
Set in 1970s Australia, the narrative follows Grace Puddle's journey into adulthood as her family fractures, leaving her estranged from her twin brother. Amidst anxiety and despair, her life takes a turn when she befriends an eccentric elderly woman named Pinky.
Joining Snook in the voice cast are Jacki Weaver, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Dominique Pinon, Magda Szubanski, and Eric Bana.
The production, helmed by Arenamedia with Liz Kearney as producer and Robert Connolly and Robert Patterson as executive producers, has completed filming in Melbourne, Australia, and is currently in post-production. Madman Entertainment will oversee distribution in Australia and New Zealand.
"Memoir of a Snail" received substantial funding from Screen Australia, in partnership with Anton and Charades, and support from various entities including Vic Screen, Mind the Gap Finance, MIFF, and private investors. Anticipated for release in 2024, the film promises to be a poignant exploration of friendship, loss, and resilience.
